Who: March Of Dissent are skaters and humanists with straight-edge leanings and bottomless faith in American traditions of music-as-protest.
Our bassist is an IT wizard by trade and has a musical background in violin...but has since become obsessed with a much lower and nastier register.
Music is all our vocalist has ever wanted to do. She started writing rhymes and lyrics in class but found an alternate path in the undeniable energy of HxC and DeathMetal; she has since continued to explore more abstract forms with several ongoing noise projects.
Our guitarist (2nd vocalist, producer and primary songsmith) comes from a musical family and a background in sociology/philosophy. He started studying blues guitar and playing hardcore punk at age 12. By the time he was 16 he had become obsessed with breakdowns and the anti-consumerist identity of the hardcore scene, so he started a prog/hardcore band that played out west during the late 90's and early 00's. When life happened and the scene started to crumble, he found himself working long hours as a machinist to feed his family while attending university during down time.
Then, during COVID, his daughter (a musician and trans activist in her own right) ended up at home for extended periods with him and his wife (now learning to play bass). They bonded over playing heavy music together, and the first seeds of the band that would become March of Dissent were planted.
What: Our newest track "Sunk Cost" is a reflection of and a response to the sense of injustice that is born, solidified and strengthened when, because of political shifts towards hate and hubris, times get tough for those on the fringes.
Our take is that the more people align with and engage in a tyrannical, homogeneous and hateful belief system, the more extreme the belief system as a whole becomes. Eventually a monster with a life all its own emerges from this collective; and the individuals that make up this new organism are so invested in the maintenance of its ideology that they are blind to the pain and suffering it causes the individual humans it is composed of and preys upon. Eventually the people that make up the organism sink so much of themselves into the schema that they radicalize and become oblivious to the human cost of the illogic and injustice that they promote in the name of their ideology/leader...and are thus unaware of the Sunk Cost Fallacy they have fallen for.
Why: Generally, to use our love of music (art) to combat the feelings of helplessness that inevitably develop when erosion of human rights becomes your new normal. Towards that end, this track was created during a period where information silos and isolationism seemed to be turning reasonable human beings into radical fascists at an unprecedented rate. We wanted to write about our feelings and perspective on these events: Sunk Cost is the result.
When: The band started in earnest in 2022. Sunk Cost was started in January of 2025, and finished in July of the same year.
How: We write and record each song individually--as time allows and inspiration presents itself--in DIY fashion at our home studio in the Mountains of the Northern Wasatch Front. Usually guitar riffs, ideological themes, and rhythms provide the structure for further inspiration and elaboration. This is a labor of love for us, and as such we all still have to do other "normal-ish jobs" to make ends meet. Unfortunately this means that we do not have the requisite material or resources to support touring or playing out just yet. But with your support we hope to--some day soon--be able to make that possibility a reality.

March of Dissent's members strongly believe in a correspondence theory of truth and an America free from tyranny (populist or otherwise); one where our fundamental humanistic values (i.e. protection of citizens' rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; freedom of expression; freedom of speech) are not trumped by subjective justifications and/or private agendas that prioritize consolidation of power and acquisition of wealth (in the hands of the few) over the day-to-day needs of the many. As our collective identity is a complex blend of both minority and majority populations, we are forever dedicated to equality, inclusivity, artistic integrity, and authenticity. Yes, we are fully aware that not everyone agrees with our views, and we respect their right to believe and say what they choose as well--provided they respect our right to do the same.
